چکیده

Several radio galaxies are known that show radio morphological signatures that are best interpreted as restarting of nuclear activity after a period of quiescence. The conditions surrounding the phenomenon of nuclear recurrence are not understood. In this paper we have attempted to address this question by examining the nuclear fuelling characteristics in a sample of restarting radio galaxies. We have examined the detection rate for molecular gas in a representative sample of nine restarting radio galaxies, for seven of which we present new upper limits to the molecular gas mass derived from CO line observations we made with the IRAM 30-m telescope. We derive a low CO detection rate for the relatively young restarted radio galaxies suggesting that the cessation of the nuclear activity and its subsequent restarting may be a result of instabilities in the fuelling process rather than a case of depletion of fuel followed by a recent fuel acquisition. It appears that abundant molecular gas content at the level of few 10 – 10 M⊙ does not necessarily accompany the nuclear restarting phenomenon. For comparison we also discuss the molecular gas properties of five normal giant radio galaxies, three of which we observed using SEST. Despite obvious signs of interactions and nuclear dust disks none of them has been found to host significant quantities of molecular gas.

The molecular gas in (some) early type galaxies holds important clues to the history and the future of these galaxies. In pursuit of these clues we have used the BIMA millimeter array to map CO emission in the giant elliptical galaxies NGC 83 and NGC 2320 and to search for CO emission from the S0 galaxy NGC 5838. We also present V and R images of NGC 83 and NGC 2320 which trace their dust distr...

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

H2O megamaser emission from FR I radio galaxies

A systematic search for 22 GHz H2O megamaser emission is reported for 50 nearby (z <∼ 0.15) FR I galaxies. No detection was obtained, implying that ultraluminous H2O masers (LH2O > 10 3 L ) must be rare in early-type galaxies with FR I radio morphology. Despite higher radio core luminosities the detection rate for our sample is lower than in similar surveys of late-type Seyfert galaxies. This p...

0 Molecular Gas in the Powerful Radio Galaxies 3 C 31 and 3 C 264 : Major or Minor Mergers ?

We report the detection of CO (1 → 0) and CO (2 → 1) emission from the central regions (. 5–10 kpc) of the two powerful radio galaxies 3C 31 and 3C 264. Their individual CO emission exhibits a double-horned line profile that is characteristic of an inclined rotating disk with a central depression at the rising part of its rotation curve. The inferred disk or ring distributions of the molecular ...

Dust and molecular gas in high redshift radio galaxies

This review discusses the current status of our knowledge of emission by dust and molecular gas in high redshift radio galaxies, and the uncertainties in the derivation of physical parameters from these data. The similarity of far-infrared luminous, gas-rich high redshift radio galaxies and local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs) is discussed. Given that local ULIGs rapidly convert most o...
